Wayne Rooney is close to agreeing to a new contract worth £35 million that will keep the star striker withManchester United until 2015.

Rooney’s new salary of £130,000-a-week would make him the highest paid player in United history, and both sides are keen to get the deal done before the new Premier League season begins, according to
The Mirror.

United chief executive David Gill will talk with the England international and his agents when he returns from holiday in Barbados, with an announcement to come before the Red Devils’ league opener against Newcastle United on August 16.

Real Madrid have been interested in making a big move for Rooney so United decided to lock up their star striker with a lucrative new deal, which will pay him £6.76 million a year.

The 24-year-old has two years remaining on his current, £90,000-a-week deal and has a image rights deal that earns him an additional £760,000 a month from United.

Rooney enjoyed a spectacular season last year, scored 26 Premier League goals as United fell just short of champions Chelsea in their big to win a record fourth consecutive league title
