Rio Ferdinand of Manchester United

Clutching at straws: Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand is praying that the 'weird'Barclays Premier League season will throw up one more freak result and handManchester United the title.

Chelsea must slip up at home against lowly Wigan Athletic on Sunday if the champions are to hold on to their crown, while United need to beat Stoke City at home.

The Blues have the strongest home record in the top flight, while Roberto Martinez's men have lost 13 of their 18 games on the road this season, but that hasn't stopped Ferdinand dreaming.

'It’s been an exciting season,' said the 31-year-old. 'The number of lesser teams on paper who’ve been taking points off the top four has been higher, when it’s been a case of the big teams beating all the others and then dropping points against each other.

'It’s been a weird season. Hopefully that will bode well for Chelsea's game on Sunday.'
